Real Madrid has dominated the Brazilian transfer market in recent years under the leadership of chief scout Johnny Calafat. However, Chelsea look set to outpace them in the latest teenage wonderkid to appear on their radar.
Sport Recife’s 17-year-old right-back Pedro Lima has already become a regular for the Ligue 2 side this year, regularly playing the full match. Lima’s exploits attracted interest from Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Real Madrid, but Chelsea made an €8m bid.
Sport Recife president Yuri Romao is currently on his way to London to continue negotiations, according to Diario AS. Their plan is for RC Strasbourg, which is under the same ownership, to complete the purchase due to Chelsea’s Financial Fair Play concerns, and he will then presumably move to Chelsea.
Lima’s skill set is impressive, and his seamless adaptation to senior football at just 17 years old is equally impressive. Real Madrid are likely to look for an eventual successor to Dani Carvajal in the coming seasons, although academy right-back Jesus Fortea is as highly rated as any player in the club’s academy. Fortea is only a few months younger than Lima, and Los Blancos may not have felt it necessary to move for him as a result.
