A new off-court chapter opens in the life of Miguel Herrera. In the latest incident, Piojo landed himself in trouble for confronting a fan who reproached him after Friday’s 1-1 draw against Querétaro in protest of the Xolos’ dismal performance.
No long after the final whistle sounded at Estadio Caliente, a video was uploaded on social media showing the moment when Herrera exchanged heated words with a fan. A number of Tijuana supporters were seen calling the coach to complain about the team’s situation and poor run of form. Some shouted, “Get out Piojo!” to which the strategist responded, as he was heading back towards the locker room, shouting: “Get out of yourself mother….”
Xolos, penultimate in the table
Xolos’ heyday was many years ago. It’s been a long time since the team was a force to be reckoned with in the Liga MX. Under Miguel Herrera, things haven’t changed – the team has not been able to reach the objective of making the playoffs during the 12 months that Piojo has been at the helm. In the Clausura 2023, the team finished 15th – a position they barely improved on in the last tournament, the Apertura 2023, when they ended 13th and with no options of playing the postseason.
So far, this season is starting to look like another lost cause. Tijuana are still without a win in six games and lie second from bottom in the standings with three points, from draws against Querétaro, Atlas and Chivas. Herrera’s team have suffered defeats to América, Cruz Azul and Pachuca – results which have left them eight points off the direct qualification places but just one point off the playoff positions.
Tijuana are next in action on Saturday when they are guests of Atlético San Luis at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez. They follow that game with another away trip – to Toluca, the return home for a date with Monterrey in Week 9. Since taking charge in February 2023, Herrera has a balance of eight wins, eight draws and 20 defeats, giving him a worrying win rate of just over 22 percent.
