Super Eagles coach Fenidi George has released his first squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup, including NRL wing-back Ismail Siddiq.
Super Eagles coach Fendi George has announced his first squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, a mix of familiar faces and new talent led by NRL star Siddiq Ismail.
The highlight of Fenidi’s 23-man squad is Siddiq, the Remo Stars defender who has caught the eye in the Nigerian Premier League, with 12 assists this season.
Super Eagles Manager Fenidi George has expressed his opinion on inviting Michael Olise and other foreign-born Nigerians.
Siddiq Ismail has been overlooked by Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro despite establishing himself as the best creative center in the NRL at Remo Stars.
Fenidi includes Ismail in the Super Eagles list
The Remo Stars defender’s exceptional performance has earned him the title of ‘Nigerian Danny Alves’ from one of Nigeria’s best youth coaches, and now he will have the opportunity to showcase his talents on the international stage.
“He works hard and has honed his cross-passing skill,” Ajibold Olumide told Pulse Sports during a chat. “He is definitely the best right-back in the league and balanced in his game overall.”
Born and raised in Lagos, Siddiq’s journey to the top has been inspiring. After honing his skills on the streets, the young defender earned a place at the Remo Stars Academy, where he developed into one of the premier players in the league.
Siddiq’s inclusion underscores Fenidi’s desire to inject new blood into the Super Eagles’ squad as they begin their quest to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The full-back will join the likes of Victor Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ademola Lookman in the squad, as Nigeria face a tough opening match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on June 7, followed by a trip to Benin Republic four days later.
Siddiq will be determined to seize his chance and make a strong impression on the international stage, as he looks to follow in the footsteps of his nickname, ‘Nigerian Dani Alves’.
