Determined Alonso Denies Ortola –

The Moto3 Italy round in 2024 marks the seventh round of the championship. After his fourth win of the season at the Moto3 Catalan Grand Prix, David Alonso leads the riders’ standings by 14 points.

Qualifying

David Alonso made a determined bid to take pole position in the Moto3 Italian Grand Prix.

The Colombian had broken the lap record in each of the three practice sessions, but that gave Ivan Urtola the impetus to look for Alonso in qualifying.

Urtola used that to take provisional pole from Alonso for almost the entire duration of the session, but a mistake by the Spaniard on the penultimate lap cost him a decisive distance from his rival, just as Alonso began what could be his best lap of the session.

Although he couldn’t reach the 1:53 as he did in P2, Alonso’s 1:54.194 was enough to take pole position, and means he will enter tomorrow’s race as the only rider to lead this weekend’s session in the Moto3 class.

Urtula’s tactics were questionable but clever. Not only did he use Alonso as a drop and marker, he also disturbed the Colombian’s rhythm and got into his head a bit. Obviously, Alonso’s mental strength is impressive, but credit goes to Urtola for doing everything he could to hold off a rider he knew was faster than him.

José Antonio Rueda completed the top three ahead of Colin Viger, who crashed on the final lap. Dani Holgado and Luca Lunetta join Viger in the second row.

Jacob Rolston finished seventh, ahead of Taio Furusato and Joel Kelso on the third row, while Riccardo Rossi completed the top ten in qualifying. Xavi Zorotoza and Stefano Nepa join the No. 54 on the fourth row.

Another new lap record was set by David Alonso at Mugello, almost two seconds faster than the current lap record come the weekend.

Before 2024, no one had ridden a Moto3 bike around Mugello in under 1:56, yet Alonso reached 1:53 after the second session.

Alonso was again in a second of his own, the only competitor in the 53s. Ryusei Yamanaka and Collin Veijer were second and third, ahead of Stefano Neypa, Ivan Ortola and José Antonio Rueda who completed the top six, with Rueda the last rider at 1:54 seconds.

Adrian Fernandez was seventh, ahead of Jacob Rolston, Tatsuki Suzuki and Taio Furusato. Riccardo Rossi, Xavi Zorrutoza, Dani Holgado and Luca Lunetta secured the immediate last four positions in Q2.

David Alonso was quickest again in the first Moto3 practice at Mugello. The Colombian was nearly 1.2 seconds faster than the record he set in free practice, and more than 0.5 seconds clear of the field.

The lap record this weekend was 1:56.001, but Alonso has now lowered it to 1:54.671, and there were only two other riders under the 1:56 barrier in Moto3 P1: Collin Vijer and Ryusei Yamanaka.

José Antonio Rueda came in fourth place, while Luca Luneta continued his excellent form since the morning and from Catalonia to end the day in fifth place, and Ivan Ortola rounded out the top six.

Stefano Nepa came in seventh place, ahead of Joel Kelso, Adrian Fernandez and Jacob Rolston.

David Alonso topped his 19th session of the last 21 Moto3 free practice sessions at Mugello, once again benefiting more than one second from second place.

Despite some wet spots around the track, Alonso was under the Moto3 lap record by the end of free practice, and was the only rider at 1:55. To put his superiority into real perspective, Ryusei Yamanaka only managed a lap of 1:56.

Behind Yamanaka, José Antonio Rueda was third, and Dani Holgado was fourth, 1.3 seconds behind Alonso. Holgado was ahead of Stefano Neypa and Xavi Zorrutoza who completed the top six, while David Munoz, Luca Luneta, Colin Viger and Matteo Bertil completed the top ten.
