Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has insisted the door remains open for Andretti to join F1, though only if it takes over an existing outfit.
The Amercian team had attempted to join the grid in either 2025 or 2026 in partnership with General Motors brand Cadillac, only to be denied entry by FOM having passed through the initial FIA application phases.
It means it was the second time in recent years that Michael Andretti had failed in his bid to join the grid having seen a deal to take over Sauber fall through at the 11th hour in 2021.
Whilst any chance of Andretti joining the grid looks increasingly slim, Horner has not shut down the possibility completely.
F1 position ‘clear’
“Formula 1 made its position clear,” Horner told media including RacingNews365.
“It doesn’t mean that Andretti can’t come, it just means that they can’t come as a new or 11th team.
“So the opportunity still exists for them to take over an existing franchise or team if they can reach commercial terms.”
McLaren CEO Zak Brown added: “The decision has been made, F1 laid out what the criteria was and they made the decision.
“We are just focused on our own race team and getting on with the season.”
