The first day of pre-season testing in Bahrain offers a great opportunity to take a detailed look at the new cars, with the new Williams FW46 featuring one distinctive new feature.
In the cockpit, the team has finally ditched the LED screen on the chassis bulkhead, with it now being on the steering wheel, as the other nine teams did so back in 2014.
When the new turbo hybrids were adopted, teams were permitted to have screens on the steering wheel to aid drivers – only Williams did not do so, placing theirs on the bulkhead and off the wheel.
Then-technical director Pat Symonds believed the decision removed steering inertia.
Alex Albon was behind the wheel of the FW46 in the morning session in Bahrain, clocking a best time of 1:34.587s – but he ground to a halt with about 20 minutes of the morning session remaining as Logan Sargeant’s afternoon running was delayed.
