A points-scoring round at the private Thermal Club members venue will be part of IndyCar’s 17-round schedule in 2025.
In a largely unchanged calendar compared to this year, IndyCar also confirmed that the Nashville superspeedway — rather than the revised downtown track — will once again close its season.
The Thermal Club has been a venue for pre-season testing ahead of the 2023 season, and earlier this year hosted a $1 million non-tournament in an experimental thermal format that was met with mixed reviews.
But the circuit itself received a positive reception from the drivers, whose main complaint was that they did not want a non-championship round as the second event of the season.
The private club, where membership costs upwards of $5 million, will essentially retain that spot on the calendar but has now been upgraded to a true point-scoring event that will take place on March 23, three weeks after the traditional season opener in St. Louis. Petersburg.
Gateway Weekend features the most significant shift in history from year to year, moving forward from August 17 of this year to June 15 of 2025.
The Laguna Seca Tour goes back more than a month since its June 15 date of this year.
This will be the final of five rounds in July, which also includes visits to Mid-Ohio, the Iowa double oval race, and the Toronto street race.
Most of these adjustments are possible for 2025 because there is no conflict with the Olympics, which NBC, IndyCar’s current broadcast partner, has blanket coverage this year from July 26 to August 11.
This year will be NBC’s final year as broadcaster of IndyCar, as the series announced a new deal with Fox Sports.
Despite the addition of Thermal as a points race, the calendar remains at 17 points-paying events, with the dual round of Iowa now the only such round on the schedule.
Milwaukee, which is hosting two races this year, will be reduced to just one competition.
It has also been confirmed that there will not be a race in downtown Nashville again this year.
The city was originally announced as the season’s final host for 2024 but in February, six months after unveiling the revised street circuit, the series said the race would move to the off-city oval.
Street racing in Nashville was based on the Tennessee Titans football team’s stadium, which is being redeveloped — raising planning and logistical challenges.
The stadium work is scheduled to be completed in 2027, which would theoretically allow IndyCar to return to downtown — perhaps early in the season.
But when the 2024 venue change was announced, event sponsor and director Scott Borchetta said “I think the less we use downtown, the better,” meaning the yet-to-be-revealed revised design initially revealed for 2024 had been decided. It is not used. .
