The Kazakh Grand Prix has been replaced by the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on the 2024 MotoGP calendar.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be the third race in MotoGP history to bear this name, following the previous two editions in 2020 and 2021. As was the case then, this year’s edition will be held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, which will also host the San Marino Grand Prix and Riviera Rimini from September 6 to 8, as well as the post-race test on September 9.
The reason for adding a second Misano race is the cancellation of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix. Kazakhstan was originally added to the MotoGP calendar for 2023, but the Sokol International Circuit was not ready in time to host last year’s race. After being added to the calendar again in 2024, regional flooding in Central Asia towards the end of spring led to the race being postponed, and it was eventually rescheduled for September 27-29 when the Indian Grand Prix, originally scheduled for that date, was cancelled.
However, logistical problems caused by the aforementioned floods in Central Asia “made it impossible to hold the event in 2024,” according to a MotoGP statement.
The statement read: “The FIM, FIM and Dorna Sports announce the cancellation of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix. Operational and logistical issues caused by previous flooding throughout the region have made it impossible to hold the event in 2024.
Instead, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from September 20-22.
“We at MotoGP are delighted to be organising a second event in the iconic Adriatic location, giving the passionate Italian fan base another chance to see the world’s most exciting sport in action.”
The Emilia Romagna race will be held on the same date, September 27-29, two weeks after the San Marino Grand Prix, one week before the Indonesia Grand Prix, and on the same date as the inaugural WorldSBK race at the Cremona circuit in Italy.
