Atletico Madrid star has surprise €15m release clause

Atletico Madrid’s relationship with Alvaro Morata has always been somewhat complicated, as he arrived as one of the most expensive signings in their history and was loaned out a year later. It looked as if he would finally become the 20-goal-per-season striker Atletico needed in La Liga, but an impressive first half of the season gave way to a disappointing second.

However, Relevo says Atletico have full confidence in Morata for next season, but knows he could leave if the team pays his release clause this summer. They are unable to prevent the 31-year-old from leaving if a bid of €15m arrives, which is a surprisingly low amount for a striker of his quality.

Morata has also been contacted by Major League Soccer and Saudi clubs, including Al-Shabab. After he went to fans to bid them farewell on Sunday, and after his partner’s story was published, it only fueled speculation about his future.

According to Matteo Moretto, Atletico have inquired about Stuttgart striker Serho Geraci, who is also of interest from Borussia Dortmund and has a €17.5m release clause. Girona striker Artem Dovpik was linked to Atletico last week, and has a €40m release clause, while Villarreal’s Alexander Sorloth will be available for €38m – Sorloth and Dovbick appear to be worth much more than Atletico are likely to spend. Sorloth is also happy in Castellon, and it will take some convincing.
