Thursday at the Sachsenring was the first opportunity for MotoGP’s top riders to share their reactions to the possibility of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton becoming a team owner in the series – and it’s fair to say it would be a very popular move.
Multiple MotoGP sources told The Race that Hamilton’s representatives were taking initial steps towards Hamilton adding Gresini Racing to his sporting investments in a full takeover if it went ahead.
Hamilton did not rule it out when asked about the matter ahead of Thursday’s British Formula 1 Grand Prix.
He did not confirm that talks were underway, but he confirmed his interest in MotoGP.
“I have always loved MotoGP,” he said. “I am interested in the potential growth of the sport, but I have not looked into it in depth yet.
But anything is possible.
“I’m definitely interested in stocks – already. [Denver] The founding of the Broncos was the first step in team ownership.
“In the next five to 10 years, we hope there will be more.”
There was a degree of caution among the riders asked about the matter in Germany today – not because Hamilton would be an unwanted presence in the paddock. Quite the contrary, there was more caution in case the news turned out to be too good to be true.
Current Gresini rider Marc Marquez feels that even if it doesn’t happen, the fact that it’s being discussed is good for MotoGP – and he jokingly referred to recent rumours of him buying the team as well.
“If it’s true, it would be good for our sport,” he added.
“Even if it’s not real, it’s good for our sport because in the end MotoGP needs people to talk about it!
“I might consider buying a team too! But I don’t have enough money!”
World Championship leader Jorge Martin agreed that the move would be an exciting development for MotoGP – one that proves the championship’s appeal.
“If that happens, it will be interesting,” he added.
“This is because the sport is growing, and this is certainly just the beginning. The future, the years to come, will be really interesting for MotoGP.
“If someone really creative like Hamilton wants to buy into MotoGP, it’s because something is changing and I’m really interested in that.”
News of Hamilton’s potential interest in MotoGP comes as Formula 1 owner Liberty Media prepares to take over MotoGP as well.
